This property is a proud partner of the NC State University, NC Aquarium, and Duke University in the study of the Crystal skipper, a butterfly species found only along the Crystal Coast from Hammocks Beach State Park to the Rachel Carson Reserve. The dunes at Carpe Diem provide an ideal research location, so from time to time, you may notice researchers in front of the home. They are involved in counting the butterflies, catching and releasing them for research, identifying plants, and monitoring the butterfly's development. Should you see researchers near the dune line, there is no need to worryyou're simply witnessing important conservation work in action.
